Financial associations weigh response to new regulation

With Congress poised to consider the Obama administration’s proposed Consumer Financial Protection Agency in the coming months, several financial services associations likely to be most affected are remaining tight lipped on whether or not they will form a coalition to oppose its formation. The legislation, which Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.) says he hopes to have marked up by the end of July, has the support of not only the president, but also of Americans for Financial Reform, a coalition formed June 16 by nearly 200 mostly consumer advocate organizations, including AARP and ACORN.
